About Us

Founded in Kinshasa in 1977 as a specialized agency of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) in the field of telecommunications, ATU is the leading continental organization fostering developments of information and communications technologies infrastructure and services.

The African Telecommunication Union (ATU) took its present name in 1999. This led to the transformation of the agency into a partnership between public and private stakeholders in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Sector.

For nearly 31 years, ATU has coordinated the Regional positions in the International foras in relation to Standardization, Radio communication and Development of ICT.
It brings together the most influential representatives of Government and Telecommunications and ICT Industry to exchange ideas, knowledge and technology for the benefit of the continental community which is developing.

Strategic Plan.

Article 8(b) of the Constitution, tasks the ATU Council with preparing a report on policy and strategic Plan recommended for the Union together with their financial implications in keeping with the guidelines established by the Plenipotentiary Conference to ensure that the Union’s Policies and strategies fully respond to the constantly changing telecommunications/ICT environment.

Achievements.

The biggest achievement for ATU is undoubtedly the pivotal role it has played in the coordination of Africa’s ICT development needs to meet the Global standards. Thanks to the advent of internet, mobile wireless telephony, convergent networks that keeps us in touch today.

LATEST PUBLICATION
This year, the African Telecommunication/ICT Day shall be commemorated on 7th December, 2011.
