African Telecommunications Day (ATD)- 7th December 2001.

The 7th December is celebrated annually to mark the founding of the union on 7th December 1977 by the OAU. The theme for this year's celebrations is
"SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY: A CHALLENGE FOR AFRICA."

ATD is celebrated continent-wide in a variety of forms, which include symposia, radio and television discussions, media publications etc.
The theme for this year coincides with the recent launch by African leaders of the NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT (NEPAD) in which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) forms a significant component.
The event will be celebrated at the temporary Headquarters of the union. The event will be marked by symposium on issues pertaining to the theme.
